Income benefit paid by the Social Security Administration (SSA) to
  • disabled worker or
  • disabled worker's dependents
Two tests determine eligibility for
  • Income test determines how much is received
  • Resource test determines eligibility
Time Frame
  • Benefit will be paid for the sixth full month after SSA disability finding
Disability benefit equals
  • 100% of an individual worker's "Primary Insurance Amount" (PIA)
  • Actuarial reduction for each month prior to age 66 
  

  


These Cause Reduction of SSDI 
  • Workers’ compensation [state/federal payments for job-related injury] other public disability benefits may reduce individual’s Social Security benefits if exceed 80% of individual’s average current earnings before he or she became disabled
  • civil service disability benefits, military disability benefits, state temporary disability benefits and state or local government retirement benefits that are based on disability
These Do Not Cause Reduction of SSDI 
  • Disability payments from private sources, such as private pension or insurance benefit
  • Veterans Administration benefits
  • State and local government benefits, if Social Security taxes were deducted from individual’s earnings; or SSI.
